Budget Conference Committee proposes placing Proposition 49 back on the ballot On August 4, 2010, the Budget Conference Committee voted 9-0 to support a stand-alone budget trailer bill that would place an initiative on the ballot to eliminate the Proposition 49 (ASES) funding guarantee. Such an initiative would result in the Legislature determining the annual level of ASES funding through the annual budget process. In order to reach the voters, the budget trailer bill must first be passed by the Legislature and signed into law by the Governor. In 2008, the Governor vetoed a similar bill. The Legislature is expected to vote on this budget trailer bill as early as this week.

Education News: Common Core Standards Available for Comment - The Council of Chief State Officers Seeks Your Input
A National initiative has been underway to create Common Core State Standards for K-12 education. More information is available in the news release below. Following is a message from Elizabeth Partoyan from the Council of Chief State School Officers to after school practioners:
"Given your expertise in the kinds of learning and skills that children and youth best develop in the out-of-school-time hours, we ask that you lend your critical eye toward how successfully these standards fully define the knowledge and skills students should develop within their K-12 education careers—in the broadest sense. Please take time to review the draft standards documents and submit your comments by April 2 at www.corestandards.org."

Members of the State Legislature Seek Your Input for Potential After School Policy
Members of the State Legislature would like your input to help inform and shape potential policy regarding the sharing of student data between school districts and after school program providers. Legislators seek to understand how data is currently shared? Why data is or is not shared? And how after school programs could incorporate data from school districts into their programs?
