Workshop Summary
On Thursday, May 21, 2009 the Network offered a Telephone Workshop, Accessing Summer Food and After School Snack Resources. Participants learned how to access federal funding available to provide meals during the summer. The call included experts from the California Department of Education, the United States Department of Agriculture, the California Food Policy Advocates, the California Association of Food Banks, and the Food Research and Action Center. Participants learned the requirements to become a summer food sponsor (and operate many feeding sites), and how to become a summer food site (and operate under the umbrella of a sponsor). Also discussed were the number of after school snack programs that are available. The workshop also covered how to utilize local Food Bank resources to provide food to youth all year round. Participants in this workshop also heard from a successful large-scale summer food program operating in Sacramento, offering them an understanding of the day to day operations of summer food programs.
