California’s Health for All Kids Medi-Cal Expansion

The Children’s Partnership’s ALL IN for Health Campaign has released new materials to help undocumented children enroll into Medi-Cal. The expansion of Medi-Cal is expected to begin in May and will include undocumented youth under the age of 19. In the meantime, you can begin enrolling your children now in restricted Medi-Cal (also known as emergency Medi-Cal). All children enrolled in restricted Medi-Cal will be automatically enrolled in the full scope of Medi-Cal benefits once the expansion occurs. Download and print the ABC’s of Health Coverage for ALL Kids Flyer or click here for more information.

Take a Healthy Summer Break

The USDA’s Food and Nutrition Services recently published resources designed to increase the quality of meals and the amount of activity children do over the summer break. One of those resources is Summer Food, Summer Moves, a fun, hands-on resource kit designed to get kids and families excited about healthy eating and physical activity during the summer months. Another resource is The Take a Healthy Summer Break Infographic, as colorful 1-page resource that schools and community groups can distribute to parents to increase awareness of the importance of healthy choices during the summer months.

“Peace in the Streets” Student Film Contest

In 2014, Peacemaker Corps Association (PCA) launched the “Peace in the Streets Global Film Festival” for youth. The festival gives youth a voice in world affairs and an opportunity to speak and tell their story of how they would make peace. Youth 18 and under are invited to make a video on how to make “Peace in the Streets.” Films can be made on any device – phone, tablets or video cameras, and will be judged both for originality and creativity. Winners get to go to the United Nations. Films are shown at the 2016 Peace in the Streets Global Film Festival. For the rules and to learn more, click here

Many afterschool and summer leaders have asked how the Learning in Afterschool & Summer (LIAS) learning principles correspond to the California Quality Standards. To address the question, LIAS has written a blog addressing the process and provide many resources, such as the “crosswalk” paper that correlates the LIAS learning principles with the CA Quality Standards. Resources from the Wallace Foundation

The Wallace Foundation has released a publication: Collective Impact and the New Generation of Cross-Sector Collaborations for Education: A Nationwide Scan. The publication describes the landscape of collaborations today (between school systems, state and local governments, businesses, community organizations and nonprofit institutions) and trends in their location, reach and other matters. The report identifies 182 cross-sector collaborations in education operating in the United States as of January 2015. Click here for the full report. 

The Wallace Foundation is also conducting market research to better understand Policymaker, K-12 Public School Leader and Afterschool Leader opinions about trends relating to desired outcomes of K-12 education and afterschool programs.
