As we look to 2017, CAN is excited to continue connecting you to the tools, resources, and information needed to enhance program quality and ensure effective policies that support the great work that you do every day. The CAN Staff and Leadership Team has been hard at work strengthening a strong foundation for CAN and charting a new strategic direction. We are excited to release a new Strategic Plan in 2017 and begin the recruitment for new Leadership Team members. Stay Tuned!

Reminder: 21st Century Community Learning Centers RFA Deadline Approaching
Deadline: Wednesday, December 21, 2016

The California Department of Education’s Expanded Learning Division released Requests for Applications (RFAs) for 21st Century Community Learning Center (21st CCLC) Elementary & Middle School programs, and High School After School Safety and Enrichment Teens (ASSETs) programs. An estimated $15 million in funding has been allocated for 21st CCLC programs proposing to serve Elementary and Middle/Junior High School Students in kindergarten

PCY Informational Resources to Support 21st CCLC Applicants

The Partnership for Children & Youth (PCY) recently released a 21st CCLC Application Planning Guide. The guide provides updates on the changes and additions in the new RFA, and guidance for teams to better complete their applications. The guide outlines differences between the current 21st CCLC RFA and prior applications including an increased focused on year-round programming and summer learning. PCY has provided additional information regarding summer learning on the Summer Matters website

BOOST Registration is Now Open

The Best Out-of-School Time Conference (BOOST) will be held April 18-21, 2017 in Palm Springs, California.

The BOOST Conference is the largest, most recognized, and comprehensive global convening for after school, expanded learning, and out-of-school time professionals. Set in a retreat-like atmosphere, this annual, extraordinary event will rejuvenate your passion, boost your direction for quality programming, and provide tools and resources that will inspire you to create change.

This all-inclusive conference supports After School Education & Safety (ASES) Programs, 21st Century Community Learning Center (CCLC) Programs and High School ASSETS programs. Attendees include superintendents, district administrators, principals, teachers, all levels of after school and out-of-school time program staff and administrators, program directors & managers, community-based organizations such as YMCAs & Boys and Girls Clubs, line staff and school-age care providers.

 Register by Friday, March 24, to avoid on-site registration costs.

Free Social-Emotional Learning and Character Development Trainings

The California School-Age Consortium (CalSAC) is excited to offer free trainings on Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) developed in partnership with the Expanded Learning 360°/365 collaborative. The Social-Emotional Learning and Character Development training series is designed to provide participants with the foundational knowledge on the important role out-of-school time programs play in helping young people develop social-emotional and character skills, as well as their relationship to the Quality Standards for Expanded Learning in California. The Leadership for Social-Emotional and Character Development training series is designed to equip those in leadership positions to create environments for adult staff to thrive as they support youth in social-emotional learning and character development. Access additional CalSAC Trainings, here.

The Big EQ Campaign is a fully independent non-profit organization founded by a few media-savvy business leaders guided by educators and non-profit veterans highly knowledgeable about and instrumental in extending social and emotional learning in the education realm. The Big EQ Campaign intends to be the first-ever mass advertising, marketing and organizing campaign whose sole goal is that every school include in its curriculum the development of students’ and teachers’ social and emotional intelligence and skills. World of 7 Billion Video Contest 2016-2017

The World of 7 Billion student video contest can help you bring technology and creativity into your high school and middle school classes. The contest challenges students to create a short (60 seconds or less) video illustrating the connection between world population growth and one of three global challenges: climate change, ocean health, or rapid urbanization. Students can win up to $1,000 and their teachers will receive free curriculum resources. The contest deadline is February 23, 2017.
