Middle School Site Coordinator Telephone Workshops cover a new topic on the third Wednesday of every month. Making a Difference in After School - Measuring and Improving After School Quality
On March 17, 2009 the Network Quality Committee hosted the Making a Difference in After School - Measuring and Improving After School Programs workshop in Sacramento, CA. The workshop featured Robert C. Granger; President of the W.T. Grant Foundation and Nicole Yohalem; Program Director for the Forum for Youth Investment. The workshop focused on what is known about the ability of after-school programs to make a difference on academic and other outcomes, how leading researchers are defining and measuring program quality, and how practitioners and policy makers at the state and local levels are building systems aimed at improving quality. Much of the workshop content addressed the California After School Programs Quality Self Assessment tool specifically.
Lights On Afterschool 2008 - Sacramento, CA
This is a video of the Sacramento Lights On Afterschool event on October 16, 2008. Lights On Afterschool (LOA), a project of the Afterschool Alliance, is celebrated nationwide to honor the importance of after school programs for America's children, families and communities. This year the 9th annual Lights on Afterschool will be held on October 16, 2008. Last year over one million Americans celebrated Lights on Afterschool at over 7,500 nationwide events.

On Thursday, October 23, 2008 the California Afterschool Network Policy Committee hosted a Policy Update telephone workshop. Network Policy Committee Co-Chairs Brian Lee, Deputy Director of Fight Crime Invest in Kids California, and Jennifer Peck, Executive Director of the Bay Area Partnership for Children and youth offered an overview of policy related to Proposition 49 (ASES) after school funding in the previous legislative session, reviewed the recent veto of AB 1526 which would have eliminated guaranteed ASES funding, and discussed the potential future of proposition 49.

The Research Speaker Workshop held at UCLA on January 24, 2008 featured Denise Huang Ph.D. (UCLA) spoke about her participation in the recently released Department of Justice longitudinal study regarding the positive impact of the L.A.'s BEST after school program on juvenile crime rates, and Professor Deborah Vandell (UCI) spoke about her recently released study on the academic and social benefits of eight nationwide after school programs. The event also featured a focused question and answer session.
