Deadline is Quickly Approaching for ASES Renewal and Universal Applications
Deadline: Wednesday, November 9, 2016

The ASES Renewal Application is for existing grant recipients in Grant Cycle B who wish to continue funding at existing levels. The ASES Universal Application is for new applicants and for existing grant recipients who wish to increase funding. Approximately $5 million in funding is available for ASES Universal grants. The remaining funds are obligated for ongoing grants funded via the Renewal application. Reminder: 21st Century Community Learning Centers RFA Deadline Approaching
Deadline: Wednesday, December 21, 2016

The California Department of Education’s Expanded Learning Division released Requests for Applications (RFAs) for 21st Century Community Learning Center (21st CCLC) Elementary & Middle School programs, and High School After School Safety and Enrichment Teens (ASSETs) programs. An estimated $15 million in funding has been allocated for 21st CCLC programs proposing to serve Elementary and Middle/Junior High School Students in kindergarten

Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson Congratulates Department of Education’s Expanded Learning Leaders

On October 20th, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson recognized the California Department of Education 2016 California Expanded Learning Award winners. The award ceremony was a part of the Lights on Afterschool celebration. Improving and expanding afterschool has been a top priority for Superintendent Torlakson and states, ”Expanded learning programs help students thrive acadamically and socially.” The awards are divided into two areas: California Expanded Learning Visionary Leadership and Emerging Leadership.  There were six participants selected based on their outstanding commitment to improving and enriching the lives of young people through their Expanded Learning Programs. Register Today for the California Department of Education Expanded Learning Programs 2016 Grantee Orientation
"Building a Foundation for Quality"

The California Department of Education’s Expanded Learning Division, in partnership with the California AfterSchool Network, will be hosting two, one day Grantee Orientations for After School Education and Safety (ASES) and 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) Grantees. Orientations will take place in Ontario on November 15th and will feature an opening plenary, action planning with your team, and four workshops (Grants 101 and Beyond, Quality Standards: Because Quality Matters, (CQI)Continuous Quality Improvement in Action, and Federal Program Monitoring: Where Compliance Meets Quality). Participants are recommended to attend with teams responsible for program oversight and implementation, fiscal management and reporting (e.g., Grant/Fiscal Managers, Program Directors, Site Coordinators, and ASES & 21st CCLC program partners). LIAS Blog and Online Guide with Videos

The Learning in Afterschool & Summer (LIAS) project has posted several video interviews on the relevance of the LIAS learning principles featuring afterschool and educational leaders from across the country. Now they have published an online, magazine-style guide to the LIAS learning principles with mini clips from these video interviews. The guide can be viewed with a computer, smartphone, or tablet. Access the online videos here. They have also converted a number of important articles from the LIAS project and the Expanded Learning 360°/365 project. Click here to check it out. 

LIAS also recently hosted a Speaker’s Forum in Los Angeles featuring a presentation by Dr. Noguera, Professor of Education at the Graduate School of Education, entitled: How Race and Class Influence Student Learning Outcomes and Development. World of 7 Billion Video Contest 2016-2017

The World of 7 Billion student video contest can help you bring technology and creativity into your high school and middle school classes. The contest challenges students to create a short (60 seconds or less) video illustrating the connection between world population growth and one of three global challenges: climate change, ocean health, or rapid urbanization. Students can win up to $1,000 and their teachers will receive free curriculum resources. The contest deadline is February 23, 2017.
