Obama proposes cut to Federal 21st Century After School Funding

Demand for out-of-school time programs is growing. The cost of keeping more children safe and engaged after school continues to rise. Now more than ever, these programs need adequate funding. This spring, appropriators in the Senate and House of Representatives will determine funding levels for fiscal year 2017 initiatives that support afterschool and summer learning programs—including 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC). In his budget proposal this year, President Obama asked for a $167 million cut to 21st CCLC that would be devastating to the 170,000 children and their families who stand to lose access to their after school programs, including thousands of children in California.
