Shout out to the Youth Development practitioners who play a crucial role in shaping the lives of young people. Youth development isn’t just a job—it’s a mission. Thank you for being a beacon of hope and support for so many. 

For new and returning practitioners, the start of a new school year is also a great time to visit the Quality Standards for Expanded Learning in CA and continue implementing Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) to drive high-quality programs and experiences for young people, their families, and fellow team members. The Quality Standards are available in English and Spanish – download a copy today!

Lastly, we are excited to announce updates for two important events to create meaningful impact!

Congratulations, Lupita Perez!
2024-25 White-Riley-Peterson Fellow

Lupita Perez, Senior Specialist for Equity & Quality, has been selected as a 2024-2025 White-Riley-Peterson (WRP) Policy Fellow! The WRP Policy Fellowship is run by the Riley Institute at Furman University and equips participants with a real-world understanding of the art, science, possibilities, and realities of policy-making around afterschool and expanded learning.

For the next 10 months, Lupita will be participating in virtual and in-person meetings and trainings and developing a capstone project to improve afterschool programs and opportunities in our state. Learn more about the fellowship on their website.

HCAI Wellness Coach Scholarship Program (WCSP)
Scholarship Deadline: August 16, 2024

Post with the text: "Scholarships are available to become a certified wellness coach! You may be eligible to receive up to $35,000! Apply by August 16, 2024."Offered by the California Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAI), the Wellness Coach Scholarship Program’s goal is to educate and train students to serve as Certified Wellness Coaches (CWC) in California. WCSP provides scholarships to students in associate or bachelor’s degree programs that qualify them for Wellness Coach Certification through the education pathway in exchange for a 12-month service obligation providing CWC services in California. Eligible applicants may receive up to $35,000. The purpose of this program is to increase the number of CWCs providing direct care in California.

California Preschool/Transitional Kindergarten Learning Foundations (PTKLF)

The California Department of Education (CDE), Early Education Division (EED) has released the California Preschool/Transitional Kindergarten Learning Foundations (PTKLF). The PTKLF describe the knowledge and skills that most children ages three to five and a half develop in a high-quality early education program. The PTKLF is a revision to the Preschool Learning Foundations originally released in 2008.

Attendance Accounting and Instructional Time Webinar

The CDE will be hosting a webinar on August 14, 2024 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm to help Local Educational Agencies (LEAs) understand current independent study (IS) policy and the recent changes resulting from the 2024 Budget Act. The passage of the education omnibus budget trailer bill, Senate Bill (SB) 153, made three major changes to IS that commence this school year.

FREE Social Emotional Learning Course at UC Berkeley
Fall 2024; Orientation begins August 23rd

UC Berkeley Extension and School of Social Welfare, in collaboration with the Sacramento County Office of Education, and California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) CalHOPE Student Support Project, is currently enrolling for their Fall 2024 cohort of the UC Berkeley Social and Emotional Learning Foundations course! 

SEL Foundations is a 12-week, 3-credit, online, graduate-level course designed for California classroom teachers who work directly with PreK-12th grade students.

This course will bolster participants’ capacity to support their students with research-based SEL and well-being practices in their classrooms and schools while supporting their own personal development and wellness. Upon successful completion, participants will be credited 3 graduate units from UC Berkeley, rated the number one public university in the world.

Fellowship for Early Education Leaders

The 2024-2026 cohort of the Center for District Innovation and Leadership in Early Education (DIAL EE)’s fellowship program is now accepting applications! Co-led by the Partnership for Children and Youth, this program supports local education leaders in building skills and community to enhance their district’s early and expanded learning strategies. The program supports individuals and pairs responsible for designing, implementing, and monitoring early education strategies in their state and local education agencies to drive change and improve alignment.

Service-Learning in Civic Education for High School Youth

The National Youth Leadership Council (NYLC) is excited to embark on a new adventure to document the impact of service learning on youth views (and behaviors) to support democracy. For the upcoming 3-year pilot project, NYLC is seeking one urban and one rural school willing to implement service-learning within the core classroom curriculum across multiple subjects.
