- Updates on CAN activities
- Proposal to shift October LT meeting to Northern CA
Hello CAN Leaders,
On July 1, 2015 CAN began with the Foundation for California Community Colleges as its new fiscal sponsor. Since then we have been working hard to become established in our new home while also moving CAN forward. It is important that you are informed and engaged as a great deal of work is moving forward. Some highlights of our recent work include that we have submitted the Mott proposal and addressed Mott’s clarifying questions, we appear to be on target for timely submission of our CDE contract, and we are also on track to begin the hiring process for the CAN ED.
We look forward to moving the work further through our next LT meeting. In order to schedule our October meeting, please complete this doodle survey by Thursday August 6, 2015. Also access the survey at http://doodle.com/hzde677dbyzuia8x

CAN Updates and Progress Report
Frank, Darci, and Jeff have begun monthly check-ins with Rebecca Goldberg (Program Officer from Bechtel) and Barbara Webster-Hawkins (Fiscal Sponsor representative) to update the funder on our progress. Attached is the most recent report we shared. We expect to share another updated report with the funder and the CAN Leadership team in the next two weeks.
Proposal to hold October Leadership Team meeting in Sacramento – a message from your Chair, Frank Escobar
Greetings CAN LT Members -
I surely hope everyone is enjoying what they can of their summer and (hopefully) getting some well-deserved time off with family and friends!
We also hope you know that CAN is ever grateful of all your time and support over the year/s and in preparation for the start of this school year and our upcoming Quarter 3 LT Meeting, we wanted to make sure we were getting information out to you as soon as possible.
Traditionally, CAN has always attempted to rotate its in-person meetings between NorCal and SoCal. As you may recall, our Q2 Meeting was held in Sacramento so in most cases we’d be looking at a Q3 Meeting to be held in the Southland. That said, we would like to propose an exception for this upcoming meeting. The primary reason for the exception is due to the timing and action needed in regards to the CAN ED search process.
Darci and our CAN Search Committee have included a “meet and vote on the finalists” opportunity for LT members to take place in October. In order to make the best of people’s time, it might make more sense to hold the Q3 LT Meeting in Sacramento (where interviews will be taking place) and include the “meet and vote on the finalist(s)” activity in our Q3 LT Meeting. This would obviously prevent LT Members from having to make a separate trip to “meet and vote on the finalist(s).” Additional added value for hosting our Q3 meeting in Sacramento is that we can host the meeting at our new offices at the Foundation for California Community Colleges so that the Leadership Team can see CAN’s new home. We would then resume our normal rotation of in-person meetings in Q4.
I hope this all makes sense and we’d appreciate any feedback you might offer. There are still a number of important transition items we as a Leadership Team are moving forward and identifying and selecting our next Executive Director is certainly one of them. We appreciate your understanding and support of all the work taking place and extend a very special “thank you” to all who have been able to give of their time for these efforts! Also, there are funds to support with travel needs for LT members attending LT meetings.
We look forward to seeing everyone soon and until then, we thank you again for your significant contributions to the California AfterSchool Network and the Expanded Learning Field!
